Theaterfestival - Inspired by an age-old Greek comedy by Aristophanes, Tejaterbende Oeps! sets out in search of its own adaptation. Women's suits, office chairs, moustaches, suits, adultery, faxes, winks, absurdity, lust, no words but deeds, and so on. 'Lysistrata' has turned out to be an extremely funny collection of sensual scenes in an absurd office in which the women fight for equality of the sexes. Not to be missed!

Openingsweekend Nieuwbouw - Historically speaking, Terry Riley's 'In C' is one of the first works of minimal music. It comprises the basic principles that would later form the foundations of minimal music: a minimum of material, repeated modules, accumulation, phase shifts, open form, long duration, psychological experience, and so on. Champ d'Action and Serge Verstockt will be working with numerous ensembles, both professional and students, for the festive inauguration of the new infrastructure. You will constantly come across them as you walk from one location to the next. A unique experience!

Tentoonstelling - In parallel with the opening of our new building, we are inaugurating a new sculpture by the French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (1965, lives in Paris and Rio de Janeiro). She is creating a sort of commemorative monument for the British science fiction author J.G. Ballard, who died on 19th April 2009. Her integrated visual art project makes reference to two of his best-known books: 'The Drought' (1964) and 'The Drowned World' (1962). Gonzalez-Foerster opens up a space in the pool next to the new grand café. From here you can view a stylised, desolate-looking skyline in the water. A small exhibition in the new GrauRaum shows documents associatively linked to the genesis of this work.

Tentoonstelling - The work of the notable Antwerp architect Renaat Braem (1910-2010) appeals to the imagination. Now, in 2010, one is still astonished at the expressiveness of his architecture, his commitment to social housing and sharpness of his pen. He considered architecture and urban planning to be closely linked to the constant quest for the liberation of man, both socially and individually. The exhibition takes a trip through Braem's kaleidoscopic world. Previously unknown drawings, collages and plans from his architectural archives show both projects that have come to symbolise his work, including the social housing complex on the Kiel in Antwerp, the Middelheim Pavilion and the police tower in the centre of Antwerp, and projects that are less well known or were never built. In all of them it is evident that Braem was a versatile designer who again and again sought solutions for the tension between utopia and context, individuality and collectivity and dogmatic modernism and a more organic architecture. The shrewdness of his social and spatial analyses, his meticulous use of materials and his sculptural formal idiom are still relevant to contemporary architectural debate.

Muziek - Lecture/recitals - At the end of 2008 the legendary pianist Alfred Brendel took his leave of the concert platform. Now at the age of eighty he still appears to be brimming with energy: he writes profound essays on music, enjoys writing absurd poetry and regularly gives lecture recitals. In one of his most popular lectures he examines the question: 'Does classical music have to be entirely serious?' Brendel, from whom roars of laughter are always to be expected, truly believes that the answer is no: he prefers to hear his audiences laugh rather than cough! Naturally his elucidation is not limited to dry theory: Brendel illustrates his argument on the grand piano with numerous excerpts ranging from Haydn to Beethoven and on to Ligeti. This is a wonderful opportunity to see and hear one of our greatest pianists at work.

Muziek - Creaties - According to the Russian winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996), a poem is a conversation between the writer and the reader, the sharing of one another's loneliness. In 'The Brodsky Concerts', the actor Dirk Roofthooft conveys the essence of his poetry to the public. The music by Kris Defoort conveys what is not possible in words. Together they pay homage to Brodsky's poetry, its melody and rhyme, and to their great metaphysical themes: the sense of life, death, movement through time and space with or without love, and solidarity with something or nothingness, between someone or nobody. Joseph Brodsky read his poetry half singing, with the timbre and the execution of a Russian orthodox priest. Those who cannot understand the words will grasp that the meaning of his poetry is in the first instance communicated through the sounds. The poet is dependent on the language conveyed in his own poem. Just like Brodsky, Dirk Roofthooft and Kris Defoort allow the language to whisper each successive sound in their ear. In this way even they are amazed by the results of their own improvisation.

Theater - Director Ivo van Hove regularly returns to film, his first love. In March 2009 he presented his impressive stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 'Cries and Whispers'. And now, a few months later, he and his whole ensemble of actors have once more created a theatre production based on a film script. And again they have scored a bull's-eye! This time he has taken the plunge with a compilation of three films by Michelangelo Antonioni from the early the sixties. The performance reads like a tribute to this Italian avant-garde film-maker, who died at a ripe old age in 2007. In 'L'avventura', 'La notte' and 'L'eclisse' the focus is on man's inability to really communicate. At a fashionable evening party irresolute women and fickle men wander about like so many ships lost at sea. Due to its length the 'Antonioni Poject' was briefly put into storage after it premiered at the Holland Festival in 2009. It will be rerun in the Red Hall specially for the opening of the new building. This is the perfect venue for stage designer Jan Versweyveld's grand film landscape. Welcome to a world brimming with emotional, psychological and moral unrest. That's amore!

Using the architecture of our theatre studio and a minimal set he presents us with a performance with eight to ten actors. The starting point is Jesus Christ's face as it is portrayed in Renaissance painting. And the words 'I will'.

He always manages to unearth a profound spirituality when he, along with one of his ensembles, puts one of these religious pieces under the microscope. Each and every time, he inspires his orchestra and chorus to produce crystalline clarity that captivates every listener. But it is mainly the commitment and humility that he puts into the music in his performances that evokes a profound, even religious experience. The Collegium Vocale Gent have become widely praised for the intelligibility of their sung text. The Orchestre des Champs-Elysées again succeeds in unveiling the most stunning musical textures and orchestral colours. Such a programme could not be more beautiful to kick off the opening weekend of our new arts campus.

Kunstcampus - During the build-up to the concert by Jos van Immerseel and his Anima Eterna on Thursday 7th October 2010, which includes Berlioz' 'Symphonie Fantastique', soloists of the orchestra and students at the Antwerp Conservatory will come together for an intensive workshop on historical instruments that will last for several days. Over the years the Anima Eterna strings and wind instruments have built up a great deal of expertise in playing 'authentic music' in which the spirit of the composer's era is carefully reconstructed. With a respect for both the correct performance of the musical notation and for historical instruments, using the concert pitch and playing techniques of the time. As far as the Romantic repertoire is concerned, Anima Eterna continues to be a pioneer in dismantling the traditional approach. They here share their experience with the students and their teachers. On the first two days the programme will consist of intensive instrumental workshops. This will be followed by students engaging in practical experience of rehearsals and the 'Symphonie Fantastique' concert. The first week on the new arts campus will definitely be a 'semaine fantastique' for Antwerp Conservatory students!

Muziek - Internationaal Symfonisch - 'Back to the source, duty bound but free', is the motto of Jos van Immerseel and his orchestra Anima Eterna. From a small baroque ensemble, the company has grown into a full symphony orchestra where the musicians and the array of instruments for each project are tested against and related to historical performance practice. In the course of its career, this Flemish ensemble has repeatedly pushed the boundaries: following Bach they tackled the Viennese classics, followed by the Romantics and most recently even the 20th-century repertoire. In this concert, the musicians concentrate on the early Romantic period, in a contrasting musical sketch of the year 1830. In his 'Symphonie Fantastique', Hector Berlioz extols the amorous adventures of a young artist. The work is a milestone in the Romantic orchestral repertoire. It represents a synthesis of Beethoven's sense of monumentality in his Third and the extra-musical programmes in his Sixth with a French sense of fresh sound colours. By contrast, in Chopin's First Piano Concerto, one senses the spirit of Mozart, whose elegant melodies find their way into a carefree virtuoso banquet for ten fingers.

Theater - Traject - For this season we have compiled a programme with Ivo van Hove, who has been director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam for more than ten years. It includes no fewer than four productions by his company. Two are his own productions, one of which is for large stages and the other a new creation specially for our new Theatre Studio. Apart from this, Ivo van Hove has invited two leading foreign directors who have created a furore far beyond the borders of their countries. They will work with his ensemble of actors on two cast-iron repertory plays. Grzegorz Jarzyna from Poland will stage Racine's 'Phaedra' and director Thomas Ostermeier from Berlin will present Ibsen's 'Ghosts'. We will also be organising two important discussion sessions and presenting several films in Cinema Zuid.

Muziek - Piano - The Norwegian Gunilla Süssmann is one of the most striking rising stars of the moment. She is distinctive for her fantastic technique, her staggeringly high IQ and her cleverly devised programmes. Above all else, she possesses the rare gift of synaesthesia, meaning that she can see colours when she plays music. During her concert, she'll be seeking out colours that she does not yet know of, a journey which she embarks on with her audience in tow. In Schumann's 'Kinderszenen', Süssmann promptly demonstrates her virtuosity in colour evocations. In these 13 poetic miniatures, Schumann draws upon her childhood memories. The subtle sound alchemy of these lyrical pieces, in the profound 'Träumerei', remains enchanting. In stark contrast is the daredevil 'Kreisleriana', a schizophrenic fresco of changes of voice where Schumann displays his mastery of character variation. Brahms paid homage to his great friend and role model in his 'Schumann Variations'. With the 'Variations sérieuses' Felix Mendelssohn had earlier set a highpoint in the art of the Romantic variation.

Muziek - Jazz @ New Music - For the 2010 series, we are working more closely than ever with 'Follow The Sound'. For four full evenings, in the Theatre Studio in our brand new complex, adventurous music can be heard, from our country, Europe and the USA. We shall have major names and legends, including the rising star trumpeter Jacques Coursil and a selection of virtuosos that surround the monument that is Fred Van Hove, pianist, pioneer and co-founder of 'Follow The Sound'. Naturally, there'll be new discoveries too, and exciting newcomers like the amazing Matthew Bourne and pals, the Scandinavian cowboys from Huntsville and the young French lions who play with Jacques Coursil. Their creations venture beyond borders and genres. They are marked by echoes from jazz, classical, rock and much more. As virtuosos, they cover the whole spectrum between simple and complex, between melodic invention and scorching noise, between recognition and surprise. Yet they always appeal to a strong personal musical language, driven by curiosity and the pleasure of improvisation, in the spirit of intense collaboration and the frequent use of delicious contradiction. 'Follow The Sound 2010' does not present concerts alone. A number of leading musicians, Matt Darriau, Ernst Glerum (laureate of the Boy Edgar/VPRO Prize 2009) and master percussionist Gerry Hemingway will play live to accompany film and video. The last-named also presents the world premiere of his film about music, in which he shares how he feels and experiences it. There will also be installations, record stands and DJ sets and we expect to see you in our new grand cafe, the lively festival meeting place. Muziek - Ken uw klassiekers - For years, Jan Caeyers has enjoyed the reputation of being a first class Beethoven specialist. Recently he published a biography of the German master that is as lively as it is conscientious. After establishing the Beethoven Academy in 1993, he has now launched a new orchestra, Le Concert Olympique. It is an international ensemble that endeavours to set the music of Beethoven in a music history perspective by combining it with the compositions of immediate predecessors and successors from the late classical and early romantic periods. It is no accident that Frank Braley, a kindred spirit, is joining them to open the concert with this brand new orchestra in our Blue Hall. In 1795, Beethoven wrote his First Piano Concerto in a relatively short time and gave the first performance himself in Vienna. The work is celebratory in character with trumpet and timpani illustrating how he tried to shift the boundaries of convention. In his Second Symphony too, Beethoven developed his own unmistakable sound: capricious harmonic twists, assertive themes and surging proportions show that his work and his inventiveness are in no way inferior to the symphonic masterpieces of his former teacher Joseph Haydn. Haydn's 88th symphony is a real jewel: dazzling, energetic and compelling.

Muziek - Instrumentale Barok - The 'Brandenburg Concertos' served as an 'letter of application' for Bach, a kind of certification of his musical abilities. He was employed by the Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, not bad going; but the ambitious Bach wanted more: a large orchestra, better musicians and a higher salary. A few years previously, the Margrave of Brandenburg had favourably praised some of the pieces that Bach had played for him. The Count had a penchant for all things artistic and was extremely knowledgeable about what was on offer on the musical markets. Bach put his best foot forward, and gathered together a series of existing concertos with different arrangements and sent them to the Count. Bach didn't secure himself employment as such, but the concertos have made legends of both him and the Count. This does not come as a surprise because these sparkling and vibrant concertos offer the soloists and the orchestra every opportunity to shine. The musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin excel in their lively timbres and impeccable intonation. Playing without a conductor, they have developed an exceptionally sensitive ear for orchestral balance; something that requires endless rehearsal and strong individual musicianship. This is ensemble playing of the highest calibre!

Dans - 'Play' is a joint venture by two brilliant performers: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, whom you all know, and the charming Shantala Shivalingappa. This Indian dancer has appeared at deSingel on two previous occasions with a performance of her very refined traditional kuchipudi dance. 'Play' is being created in the new Theatre Studio at deSingel and will then premiere in the Red Hall as a production for the large stage. In all his projects Sidi Larbi Chekaoui blends various styles and traditions into his own special dance idiom. The starting point in 'Play' is when a man and a woman meet and it reveals how the story that develops between them does so reluctantly and with constant interruptions. It is a game of role-playing, seduction, imitating one another and putting on masks: they use numerous ways to win one another over, explore one another's boundaries or simply to understand one another. Despite, or perhaps precisely because of, their different backgrounds and movements, the two dancers try to build a bridge that links them. All sorts of musicians, including Gabriele Miracle and Patrizia Bovi, enter into a dialogue with them. The latter will be remembered for her animated performance in 'Myth'.

Muziek - Kwartet - At first glance, they look a bit like a rough and ready rock group. The unusual position they adopt, standing upright with, from left to right, the first violin, cello, viola and second violin, made us knit our brows, but their first notes made our hair stand on end. What a sound! What a wealth of colour! What power and energy and ensemble playing! Pure magic! The Finnish Meta4 (four young thirty-somethings) are right on track to be ranked up there with the top string quartets. Quite soon after they formed as a quartet in 2001, Meta4 won first prizes in major international quartet competitions in Moscow and Vienna for their interpretation of Haydn and Shostakovich. The quartet prefer not to specialize in a particular stylistic period or on specific composers, however. As omnivores, they have eagerly immersed themselves just as much in the works of Haydn as in contemporary Finnish compositions that are dedicated to them. Their versatility will also become apparent in their debut in deSingel. As an 'ear opener' they will begin with a new work by the Finnish composer Jouni Kaipainen (1956). In Shostakovich's Forth Quartet, Meta4 will be able to unleash, at full throttle, the opposite extremes of dance-like energy and bitter melancholy. The almost symphonic drama of Mendelssohn's final quartet could have been written for them.

Muziek - From Cage to Minimal - John Cage found his inspiration for 'Atlas Eclipticalis' in the 'Atlas Eclipticalis 1950.0' astronomical atlas, published in 1958 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Becvár. Cage took the book literally as a point of departure: he put the musical staves on top of the maps, drawing dots where the stars appeared, smaller or larger, lighter or heavier depending on the strength of the starlight. The result is a score that looks as if you were looking up at the sky. And that's how the work sounds, with mostly soft and delicate tones in a continuum of silence. The parts are arranged in 'events' of one to ten notes. The pitch is noted clearly but unconventionally, with the size of the notes determining the strength of their dynamic. Conductors and orchestras must strictly observe the instructions as laid down in the score. This was undoubtedly the case in the very first performance in Montreal in 1961, which Cage conducted himself. He wrote the work, moreover, for a variable orchestra, ranging from 1 to 86 performers. B'Rock has selected a version for eight baroque instruments that will certainly increase the work's clearness and serenity. The sculptor Joelle Tuerlinckx, struck by the visual aspect of the score, takes up the challenge of interpreting Cage's composition in sculpture. A fascinating concert is guaranteed for both ear and eye!

Kunstcampus - For many years Sergei Prokofiev was regarded as an enigma in twentieth-century music history. The greatest mystery, however, was his return to the Soviet Union in the thirties, at the height of Stalin's reign of terror. He has often been criticised for this about-turn. However, recent study has shed new light on Prokofiev's character and development. His music appears to have been inspired by a consistent spiritual doctrine. His conversion to the doctrine of Christian Science greatly stimulated his creative work and explains the extraordinary way in which he was able to translate the conditions of Soviet musical life into a personal, spiritual story. This story is worth telling, especially because of the masterpieces it generated, such as the ballet music 'Romeo and Juliet' and the opera 'War and Peace'. Muziek - Internationaal Symfonisch - The Orchestre National de Lyon specialises in its national symphonic heritage. Under the present head conductor Jun Märkl, the company has made sublime CD recordings of the entire orchestral works of Claude Debussy. Last year 'les Lyonnais' embarked cautiously on the symphonic oeuvres of Ravel and Messiaen. In deSingel too, the orchestra will hoist the 'Tricolore' (national flag) by presenting the works of the three major French colourists. Byron's 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage' inspired Berlioz' 'Harold in Italy': the composer assigned the character a melancholic viola voice and crafted his travels in a brilliantly instrumented sound world. Hector Berlioz conjured up Italian local life from his eclectic palette of sound colours, then the masters of musical watercolour, Debussy and Ravel, were let loose to add their impressionistic sea views. In 'La Mer' no particular story is told, nature is not evoked, but the sound texture itself is pure nature. Far more ironic and humane is 'Une Barque sur l'Océan' by Maurice Ravel. The piece is the result of a masterly orchestration of a piano work of his own, composed after a painting with the same title by his friend Paul Sordes.

Muziek - Prokofjev Symfonisch - Rarely has there been a composer, who has met so many obstacles as Sergei Prokofiev. It was a long, sad life for this Russian innovator who was searching for something different, something better and more beautiful, until ruthless soviet censorship put a stop to it. This season we and deFilharmonie are focusing sharply on this many-talented Bolshevik. For those who want to know more about the life and times of Prokofiev, we have programmed Jukebox Prokofiev. The 'DJ' is Annelies Beck. She has invited Frank Westerman, the winner of the 2005 Golden Owl and author of 'Engineers of the Soul', and Francis Maes, musicologist and renowned expert on Russian musical history, to talk about their favorite Prokofiev recordings. They will also discuss their personal links with Prokofiev's work and his world.

Muziek - Lecture/recitals - The Viennese Artis Quartett dissects Schubert's Quartet in D minor, D810, which is his most famous string quartet and one of his most powerful and expressive works. In the slow section he quotes his own song 'Der Tod und das Mädchen' (Death and the Maiden) based on a poem by Claudius. The whole work is permeated by a fear of death on the one hand and a longing for death on the other. During this lecture recital the Artis Quartett demonstrates how Schubert translated these feelings into music. At the end of the lecture there will be a performance of the whole work.

Theater - Theatre-maker Rodrigo García (1964) was born in Buenos Aires and moved to Madrid at the end of the eighties. Since 1989, he has, together with his company La Carnicería (The Abbatoir), developed his own special visual idiom. 'Versus' was created for the celebration of the bicentenary of the Spanish constitution. In this politically inspired work the form is raw and radical and the discourse intelligent and passionate. 'Versus' is about fighting, in a wide variety of forms. Initially Rodrigo Garcia has the audience listen unsuspectingly to a highly amusing dialogue about pizza and football, but it soon becomes clear he wants to talk about the less attractive aspects of human existence. The maker has clear opinions and he doesn't beat about the bush. He lays his finger on the problem of social injustice by drawing from our everyday reality and using video images and projected texts, dance and live music. This is a wake-up call that keeps you alert and gives you hope as García attempts to find a modus vivendi for survival in this day and age. And you are his chosen discussion partner.

Muziek - Kwartet - The Artis Quartett Wien ushers in the vocal chamber music series with a programme that is about as Viennese as their name. Special guest Birgid Steinberger, a favourite with the public at the Wiener Volksoper and the Staatsoper, is the jewel in the crown in this Viennese tête-à-tête. Haydn's opus 20 quartets inspired Robert Schumann seventy years later when he scored his opus 41. 'I can guarantee that the three quartets are not inferior to Haydn's', he wrote to Clara. The Second String Quartet (1908) by Arnold Schoenberg is, quite rightly, considered revolutionary. Not only does the composer introduce a soprano voice into the string quartet repertoire, but in the last section - 'Ich fühle Luft von anderen Planeten' - he finally frees himself from the laws of tonality. The fact that Vienna at the turn of the century was not only the setting for an atonal revolution, is apparent from the late-romantic songs by Joseph Marx.

Muziek - Prokofjev Symfonisch - Are you looking for a crash course in Prokofiev? Then this symphonic series is for you, with deFilharmonie as the instructor, at your service. The first lesson begins with the 'Luitenant Kijé-suite' which the Russian composer extracted from his music for Feinzimmer's film of the same name in 1934. It is a much-loved score with as a climax a Russian horse-drawn cart complete with sleigh bells ringing. Sibelius' Fifth Symphony was created for his fiftieth birthday. An heroic, triumphant and vibrant piece. But Sibelius was not satisfied, and it was four years before he settled on a definitive version. This one is also sublime, an undisputed masterpiece of the symphonic canon. The flamboyant Swedish trombonist, director and composer Christian Lindberg is a phenomenon. He has created more than three hundred pieces for his instrument and is widely considered to be the best trombone player ever. He is very highly regarded internationally as a conductor and composer. He returns to deFilharmonie with his own spectacular and playful piece, 'Helikon Wasp'. Positioning himself in the middle of the orchestra, he shouts and sings, conducts and plays his trombone!

Here is a programme which empathically deals with these themes: Herreweghe knows his classics inside out and with Bruckner's symphonies he has definitely earned the praise. Before the extremely religious Anton Bruckner began writing his major symphonies, he composed three masses. To play the Mass No. 2 in E minor, arranged in an exceptional manner for chorus and brass, the Collegium Vocale and the Accademia Chigiana choir have found the perfect sparring partner in the wind players from the I Solisti del Vento.
